“This album is all about studying and respecting the craft of pop songwriting, about relenting to illogical ardour, obsession, and guiltless pleasure,” SASAMI says. “It’s about leaning into the chaos of romance and sweeping devotion—romanticism to the purpose of self-destruction.”
Although her background is in classical music and manufacturing, she doubled down on Blood On the Silver Display’s lyrics: “I needed to be extra playful and talk extra with popular culture,” she says. “Once I take heed to music, I take into consideration how I really feel, how I wish to really feel, how I wish to transfer to it. And that’s what’s particular about music—the way it connects to tradition, the way it connects to totally different types of music, the way it connects to the timbre of the voice of the individual singing it.”
After establishing herself with the poised melancholia of her eponymous 2019 debut, SASAMI embraced quantity and management on 2022’s Squeeze—touring with a metallic band—however her aim on Blood On the Silver Display was to talk her fact with conviction by singing. Working with co-producers Jenn Decilveo and Rostam, with SASAMI as sole author, every Blood On the Silver Display observe viscerally captures a special thread of affection, intercourse, energy, and embodiment. “Pop music is like gasoline,” Sasami says. “It’s simply invigorating.”
